Is it a problem my neck makes noise

  • November 4, 2024

People wonder if it is a problem if their neck makes noise. Many just assume noises are bad but not necessarily. If there is no associated pain, then there really is nothing to worry about. The next question people typically ask is what is making the sounds?

Well, there are a couple of structures that could be making noise. One possibility is the actual joint surfaces rubbing against one another. As a person ages the disc space between vertebrae shrinks. This results in less overall space betweenneck adjustment the joint surfaces and sometimes the lack of space can produce noise with movement. Often this may sound or “feel” like rubbing/grinding/crackling. Frequently this is most notable after a period of not moving the head/neck. However, after moving the neck around the sound tends to disappear.

Another potential for noise production is the muscle/tendon complex sliding over a bony prominence. Often this will manifest a more of a snapping sensation. This tends to be more of a sudden event taking the person by surprise. It is often a one-off event that may occur randomly.

A third source of noise coming from the neck can be from “cracking” the neck. This tends to be heard/felt as a pop. It is really no different than cracking a knuckle in your fingers. While the noise may be unsettling to some (because it is coming from the neck), it is not a problem. For some, this is an easy noise to produce. It is fine…provided you are not truly forcing the “crack or pop” to happen.

Many worry these noises are indicators of arthritis or degeneration and are an issue. Age-related changes happen. They are not to be feared and typically are not an issue. The best thing to do IF a person is concerned is to see a muscle a joint specialist. Allow the expert to evaluate the situation and develop a plan to address any physical concerns.
