Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal reasons to search and seek care for in the US. Stretching is a common solution for many with neck pain. HOWEVER, for many the pain remains.
Why is it that even with daily stretching of what seems to be a tight neck the pain remains?
The simple answer is stretching just is NOT the answer to the question. If the response to stretching is the neck only feels “loose” for 30 minutes or less, that is not what the neck truly NEEDS.
Interestingly, in some individuals, the muscles of the neck actually become “over-stretched”. This happens as a result of the stress and strain of daily postures and positions. All the computer work and looking down or carrying heavy objects influences the resting position of the neck and shoulders. As a result, the muscles live in a constant state of stretch. Stay in that stretched position long enough and the tension will result in neck pain.
Is there a way to confirm that?
The simplest way to assess is to find out how the neck feels when the shoulders are put on “slack”. Does the tense pain change? And how does neck motion change or feel? If the tension eases and neck motion becomes and feels easier, then those neck muscles are “over-stretched”. This means stretching is not the best solution.
The answer?
Chances are the solution will be some combination of neck/scapular strengthening coupled with focused mobility work. With that said, each individual will likely have some varied elements that need to be addressed. These elements are best learned via a skilled assessment to discover the exact factors at play for any person.
