Pain When Sleeping

Are you one of the many who suffer from pain when sleeping? Suffering with pain while trying to sleep can be quite an issue. Not only is the pain problematic, but having your sleep disrupted does little for one’s mood or ability to recover.

Sleep is important to rest, reset, and recover. And an inability to get restful sleep causes problems in more ways than one. First, lack of sleep does not allow the body to heal. Restful sleep is necessary for the body. Next, disrupted sleep due to pain results in an increased sensitivity to pain. This means that less of a stimulus is necessary to feel the pain. And finally, not being able to sleep does not enhance one’s mood or ability to be productive during the day.

And as the days tick by with poor sleep, each of these issues can multiply. Hopefully you can already begin to see the importance of addressing disrupted sleep early.

For those struggling to sleep, some resort to medication or sleep aides. While they may help in the short term, chances are the issue will remain. Others may try sleeping on the floor, recliner, or sofa. Those options may or may not work as well. Still others will just lay there being angry at not sleeping due to their pain.

So what is the solution?

Well…taking steps to learn why you hurt in the first place. Then working to address that or those issues will be vital in your quest to sleep better and without pain.

But where to begin?

You do have some choices there. You could choose to start with your primary care doctor. Though chances are they will provide either medication or a referral to an orthopedic. Then you go see that orthopedic who might offer more meds, imaging, and a wait and see approach. Or you may get lucky and walk away with a suggestion to go see a physical therapist…the specialist who will break down the pieces of why it may be that you are having pain while sleeping.

Given all that, the logical starting point really should be that physical therapist. Allow that provider to troubleshoot the problem and then move you onto the next provider…if necessary. But chances are they will be able to determine and action plan that will help you to sleep better again…and without pain.
