Over my years as a physical therapist, I have intermittently worked with patents with a history of cancer or currently undergoing treatment. I will never forget my 1st experience treating a young man with cancer (he was still in high school) and I was in my last internship for PT school. He would come for a few sessions between his treatments with varied amounts of energy and strength. Every time he was scheduled and did not show up, we knew he was having a bad day. We would always reach out to him knowing there was only so much we could do for him. Every now and then he came in rather chipper which gave us some hope.
In the end, he lost his battle, but working with him gave me perspective for working with others who are currently battling cancer. Many days they will have low energy, hurt or want to cancel their session or just not want to do anything. Light activity has actually been found to be a good thing for those battling cancer. So to those battling cancer- fight on.
I have had recent interaction with an individual who overcame his battle with cancer and he wished to share some of his thoughts on how physical therapy can be beneficial. Hearing his story, I happily agreed to share his message with all of you reading. Please share with others who you may know who are suffering with cancer. Without further ado…
The Advantages of Physical Therapy for Cancer Patients
When cancer patients undergo treatment, their bodies become saturated with radiation or chemical substances. Although the afflicted cells are slowly dying off, healthy cells are also negatively impacted. Patients must recover from their treatment by resting and eating a healthy diet. However, their bodies also need some therapy in order to fight off further ailments. Explore the advantages of physical therapy for cancer patients so that recovery can be as successful as possible.
Increased Flexibility
When patients incorporate physical therapy into their recovery, they’ll notice a progressive stride towards a flexible body. Each therapy session normally includes stretching, exercise and massage. During the movements, the muscles have a chance to stretch out to their original lengths or longer. Cancer treatments often degrade the muscles, which creates a contracted sensation. A flexible body is more comfortable, and it can ward off future injuries during recovery. Patients need as many advantages as possible when cancer-related illnesses are involved.
Fewer Cancer Recurrences
According to the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, there are studies that suggest ailments have fewer recurrences with consistent exercise. These studies document patients who perform physical therapy and exercises for at least three hours each week. During the sessions, patients are exercising almost every body part. Good hormones release into the bloodstream, and patients feel better overall. Because the sessions are normally matched with healthy diets, fighting off another round of infections is possible.
Pain Reduction
A natural side effect to physical therapy is pain alleviation. According to Cure, the act of massage and movement during a session will reduce the perception of pain. Soft tissues have a chance to move into a comfortable position without strain or tightness. Patients notice that their major muscles, including the back, have a stretched-out sensation that’s conducive to a relaxed feeling. The pain will actually remain at bay for several days when therapy sessions are regular appointments.
Improved Mental Abilities
Physical therapy is crucial to a healthy mindset. Patients emerge from the session with a more optimistic view of the world. The physical vigor and social aspect to the sessions work wonders on depression and anxiety. It’s understandable for patients to feel down after any rough treatment. The physical therapy is designed to lift the person’s spirits while improving their mobility. Mental health is an important component to recovery in any patient.
Decreased Fatigue Issues
Physical therapy invites patients to move and improve with each appointment. As the body moves, it invigorates the mind and increases hormones across the body. Patients feel good with enhanced energy reserves. During recovery, fatigue is one of the worst sensations that can actually impede a successful fight against cancer cells. As therapy continues, patients will have a normal amount of energy to exercise and enjoy life.
From radiation therapy to chemo, patients have many treatment options that offer a long lifespan afterward. They should also keep physical therapy as part of their recovery process. With a healthy lifestyle and therapy help, patients can see a brighter future ahead of them.
It’s pretty great that physical therapy can help cancer victims. Who would have thought that cancer doesn’t come back as often when you get regular exercise. My uncle has skin cancer, so I’ll have to tell him about this.
