Rehab is Greater Than Pills or Surgery

  • February 17, 2025

Often when an injury occurs, people look for a quick solution. Many turn to pills or even consider surgery before rehab. Why? Because rehab takes time and effort. But what you should know is that rehab is greater than pills or surgery in most cases. Why you ask? Rehab comes without the medication side effects or risks associated with surgery. Plus if you have surgery then you will likely spend time in rehab anyway…so why not start there to begin with.

But the pain is really bad. Ok, so maybe a short bout of medication may be necessary to reduce the pain. But medication will not solve the reason for the problem in the first place. If you want a lasting solution, addressing the problem is the best option.

But my doctor says surgery is the only option. Really? The only option. What if people worked to address their issue when it was small before it dramatically impacted their daily life? What if people took steps to address their strength, flexibility, power, and balance before a problem ever exists? And what if all options were explored before committing to a surgery without any guarantees? Yep, you read that correctly. Surgery is not a guarantee of success. Some have surgery and are no better or even worse than before.

Did you know that there are several common surgeries where rehab shows equal results to surgery. That is correct. Research is now showing that procedures like meniscal debridement, some rotator cuff repairs, and even spine surgery should be performed ONLY IF treatment is not successful. Now what constitutes success is not clearly defined, BUT the sentiment is for many if not most orthopedic issues should begin with rehab.

All this suggests that rehab is greater than pills or surgery. BUT, the person must take an active role in the process. One must be willing to work through the troubles to get to the other side. There will be no easy solution that does not require some effort…either to avoid surgery or in the rehab process afterwards.
