When many individuals have knee pain (or any pain for that matter), most do not think about staying active. A good majority of people avoid activity due to pain…But is that the right way of thinking?
Our bodies have an amazing way of healing…But only if we allow and support it. The human body is made to move and when we avoid movement, little good results. Just what is not good about avoiding movement? Lack of movement can result in loss of flexibility, strength, and endurance for the musculoskeletal system. And this does not to take into account the rest of the body. Movement actually helps recovery by stimulating blood flow, which carries healing properties.
So we know activity is good, but how can it be done in the presence of knee pain?
Well…lets start with finding a position, movement or activity that does not hurt. While say running, hiking in the mountains, or playing tennis may be a problem, what about taking a walk around the neighborhood? Maybe exercising for an 60 minutes is a problem, but 30 minutes is not? How about using a stationary bike or even doing exercise in the pool? While it may not be a preferred activity, some activity is better than none (at least in the short term).
What if I try a different activity but it still hurts?
If you have struggled for more than 3 or 4 weeks without getting better then it is time to see a muscle and joint expert. Seeing such a professional, someone who can learn about what is going on is likely to be able to create a program designed for you. A program that will get you back to activity faster than the wait and see approach.
Don’t believe all of what Dr. Google says about any particular injury. There is no substitute for a hands-on evaluation of your knee. From there a program can be developed for you to get you back to activity faster and safely.
