What does it mean to have total body wellness? Is this just a physical thing? Mental well-being? Something else? The answer probably will depend upon who is answering the question. However, in this case we will consider all aspects of a person- social, emotional, physical, other.
For a person to be the “picture” of total body wellness, they need to have balance and feel good about their life in multiple domains. This may not be an easy thing for many. We are all busy with work, family, and more. It is easy to neglect some aspect of life or our overall well-being while we are focused elsewhere.
But, if we are looking to maximize this concept then everything needs to have some balance.
We need to carve out time in our day/week to exercise. Our bodies need to move and if we neglect this, we will be more susceptible to injury and mobility issues over time. This does not mean devoting 2 hours per day every day, but some time daily to exercise and move is advised.
Nutrition – are we eating well enough? Are we getting the recommended food groups to properly fuel our bodies to stay healthy? Or feeling the time crunch are we stuffing our face with fast foods, fatty foods and not getting enough fruits and veggies?
Mental Health – Very much a topic of interest lately. Stress. Anxiety. Fear. Sense of Worthlessness. None of these feelings are helpful to our self-worth and health of our body. These negative feelings produce chemical in our bodies which drain our energy and do little to help us feel and be happy. Think – what’s one thing you can do today that would make you happy? Now imagine yourself doing that thing. Allow a rush of positive feelings to come over you. Now go do it. Don’t worry about time – just do it. Do one thing every day that makes you feel happy.
If we want to maximize our health and productivity over the course of a day, we need to make sure to take care of #1. If we neglect ourselves and body, it will not serve us well. To be able to care for those who matter to you and love – first you need to be in good health.
So make the decision today to do something positive for yourself. Take steps to eat well, exercise, and do something that makes you happy for your mental well-being.
All this month, I will be sharing options to do something positive for your health and overall Total Body Wellness. Here’s to a good 2nd half of 2020.
