For those with shoulder pain, they wonder will injections for shoulder pain work? The not so surprising answer is it depends. There are several factors at play with respect to whether an injection will work or not. Not only that but will it solve the problem or just be a band aide.
To begin with, what exactly is going on to cause the pain? Is the issue a tendonitis or bursitis? Is the pain due to arthritic changes? Or what about a labral issue? Depending on the cause will influence the answer.
The chance of relief with a tendonitis or bursitis is fair. Often an injection is able to calm shoulder inflammation and irritability. But the injection will not SOLVE the issue. There will still be work to be done with respect to range of motion or strength in all likelihood. In the case of a labral issue, again it may calm symptoms but if one is to avoid surgery, work will be necessary to strengthen the shoulder. As for arthritic changes, any reduction in pain is likely to be temporary. Also, doctors are only able perform 3-4 injections per year. This is to avoid cause bone deterioration from too many shots in a short period of time. Participating in a rehab program will be critical if one is to maximize their overall function.
The underlying theme here is while an injection may help the pain, more needs to be done. Specifically, working with a muscle and joint expert is highly recommended. They will help restore range of motion and facilitate necessary strengthening for the shoulder. Basically, they will help address the likely root cause of the shoulder pain. This is necessary so that the pain will not just return after the injection wears off.
So, bottom line.. will an injection for shoulder pain work…maybe. But be prepared for more work.
