Those long-suffering with back pain wonder if back surgery is their only hope. Having tried pain medication, massage, spinal adjustments, therapy, or even injections only to still be in pain. This is a very common story and one where surgery is not necessarily necessary.
Unfortunately, many events conspire and gradually lead a person into seeking surgery as a solution. However, if the situation were approached differently from the beginning, thoughts of surgery should not exist.
Here is the problem…as a society, people feel they must know what IT is. Thus they demand advanced imaging when it is not indicated. Unfortunately, many doctors are all too happy to oblige, sometimes just to appease the patient. However, we cannot UNSEE images of the spine (or any other joint). What is known is that our body and joints change with time. If a person is over age 40, they are pretty much guaranteed to see age-related changes. These changes are normal but described to people as abnormal. This leads to concern, fear, and seeking an answer to FIX the problem (i.e. surgery)
People are conditioned to believe surgery will fix ANYTHING. This however is not the case and more and more data shows non-surgical care for many issues (especially spine) is better than surgery. However, because people believe surgery is necessary, they either don’t put in the effort with conservative care…or have such a negative attitude about the potential for change that a poor outcome is the only option.
But what if the narrative changed?
What if people were told their body is strong and resilient? That quickly starting conservative care will help them to recover lost function and reduce pain. That imaging is not necessary because their physical exam is normal (even if there is pain)…And that the only thing they would see are normal age changes. That movement and exercise is good and healthy for their back and body. Do you think their chance of success without surgery would improve?
The issue surrounding back pain and surgery can and must change. It must change at the beginning with REFRAMING the problem. Muscle and joint aches/pains happen, and it is ok. Do not fear pain, rather begin to move again and slowly get back to what is enjoyable.
Yes, there are some cases where surgery is indicated based on the physical exam and altered neurological exam. This however is such a small percentage of cases. The majority will do extremely well with conservative care, especially if started within a few weeks. The point is, anyone with back pain should seek help within the 1st few weeks to guide treatment and prevent the development of chronic pain.
